Jean de Maisonseul was a French urban planner and painter whose career unfolded mainly between Algiers and France. Trained in urban planning in Paris, he took an active part in urban planning and reconstruction in Algeria, directing the urban planning department of Algiers (1947–1956) and drafting the reconstruction plan for Orléansville after the 1954 earthquake. He also held academic posts at the University of Algiers, including director of the Institute of Urbanism (1970–1975).
Alongside his technical work, he maintained a vigorous artistic practice. From the 1930s he attended studios in Algiers and moved in circles that included Le Corbusier and Albert Camus. His painting, described as “mineral” by Camus, treats a variety of subjects — prisoners, beggars, landscapes of Chenoua and Tipaza, and compositions inspired by stony motifs — and shows a sustained attention to the forms and signs of rock.
After Algerian independence he took part in the reorganization of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers, helping to return works and to promote local artists such as Baya and Bettina Heinen-Ayech. In retirement he settled in Cuers, where he continued to exhibit regularly until his death in 1999, leaving a legacy in both urban design and the Algerian and Franco-Algerian art scene.
