Jean Drapeau was a Canadian politician and the central figure in Montreal municipal life for much of the twentieth century. Trained as a lawyer, he rose to national prominence by participating in inquiries into police corruption and, as mayor, led an administration defined by ambitious urban and cultural projects. Under his leadership the city hosted Expo 67, built the Montreal Metro—noted for its rubber-tired trains and fully underground network—and erected the Place des Arts cultural complex. Drapeau also secured a Major League Baseball franchise for the city (the Expos, 1969) and brought the 1976 Summer Olympic Games to Montreal, which led to the construction of the Olympic Stadium and its inclined tower. His legacy is twofold: he raised Montreal’s international profile and modernized much of its infrastructure, but his tenure was also linked to large costs, controversies and criticism—most notably the budget overruns associated with the Games and disputed episodes of heritage preservation. He was the city’s longest-serving mayor and left a lasting imprint on the municipal landscape, with parks and stations bearing his name.
