Jean Hamburger was a French physician, surgeon and essayist, recognized as a pioneer of nephrology. In the postwar years he and René Kuss defined methods and rules for renal transplantation, helping establish the medical specialty focused on the kidneys and their diseases. In 1952 he performed the first renal transplant in France at the Necker Hospital; although the graft failed, he extended rejection control for weeks, a notable advance for the time. Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s he achieved important milestones: creation of the first artificial kidney in 1955, the first prolonged dialysis "succession" in 1953, and clear transplant successes between twins (1959) and between non‑twins (1962). He also carried out fundamental research on renal immunology, graft immunology and autoimmune diseases, fields decisive for the development of treatments. Beyond his clinical and scientific work, he wrote numerous essays and books on medicine and the human condition, and held seats in prestigious national institutions, receiving high honors. His legacy lies in the institutionalization of clinical and surgical nephrology in France and in the advances that made modern renal transplantation possible.
