Jean-Hugues Anglade is a French actor, screenwriter and director whose career solidified in the 1980s and 1990s. He became known for his dramatic intensity in leading roles by important French filmmakers, notably in Patrice Chéreau’s L'homme blessé (1983) and Luc Besson’s Subway (1985). His international breakthrough came with Betty Blue (37°2 le matin, 1986) by Jean-Jacques Beineix, which expanded his visibility with both audiences and critics.
Throughout his career he accumulated several César nominations, won the Jean Gabin prize in 1987 and received the César for Best Supporting Actor for La Reine Margot (1994), again under Chéreau’s direction. He acted in productions by European and North American directors, including appearances in Killing Zoe (1993) and Taking Lives (2004), underscoring his international reach.
Beyond his film acting, he wrote and directed Tonka (1997), and took part in notable television series, playing Commissioner Adamsberg in adaptations of Fred Vargas’s works and Commander Eddy Caplan in Braquo. His career spans auteur cinema, television projects and commercial films, making him a reference in contemporary French screen theatre.
