Jean Lorrain, the pen name of Paul Alexandre Martin Duval, was a singular figure in Belle Époque French literature, known for his prolific work as a poet, novelist and columnist. Associated with the Symbolist movement and the Decadent aesthetic, he produced work characterized by a cutting style of language and an interest in the backstage world of vice and social transgression. His vitriolic columns and stories about vulgarity and pleasure scandalized his contemporaries and earned him wide journalistic notoriety. The author of novels, short-story collections and plays, he achieved commercial success with the collection Sonyeuse and critical recognition with Monsieur de Phocas. A regular at Parisian salons and bohemian venues—from the Chat Noir to the literary magazines of the time—he had conflicted relationships with contemporaries such as Robert de Montesquiou and Guy de Maupassant, and friendships with figures like Edmond de Goncourt. Lorrain’s public image was tied to the dandy and the provocative aesthete: he published cruel portraits, celebrated his homosexuality and cultivated a deliberately scandalous persona. His work influenced later writers and remains cited as a literary expression of fin de siècle France, although his private life, drug abuse and illness brought an early end to his career.
