Jean-Marc Rouillan is a French far-left militant, founder and leader of the armed group Action Directe. Active since the 1970s, he took part in the creation of the Iberian Liberation Movement (MIL) and the Groups of Internationalist Revolutionary Action (GARI), organizations that operated clandestinely in the anti-Franco environment in Catalonia and southern France. In 1979 he helped found Action Directe and, after a first arrest in 1980 and a brief amnesty in 1981, returned to armed struggle as a member of a cell responsible for bombings and political assassinations in the 1980s. Sentenced in 1987 to life imprisonment for crimes attributed to his cell, Rouillan remained a controversial public figure by refusing to renounce his convictions and by claiming the status of political prisoner. During his detention he developed a literary and journalistic practice, writing memoirs, prison chronicles and texts on prison conditions in France. Author of several books, including accounts of the GARI and reflections on incarceration, Rouillan also contributed to publications of social critique. Released on parole in 2012, his career remains linked to the period of armed militancy in the 1970s and 1980s and to the public debate on political violence, accountability and memory.
