Jean Félix Piccard was an organic chemist, engineer, professor and a pioneer of high‑altitude ballooning. Born in Switzerland and naturalized in the United States, he became known for inventing clustered balloons and, together with his wife Jeannette, for developing the plastic balloon—contributions that influenced stratospheric flights, aeronautics and space applications. Early in his career as an instructor, he led experiments that reduced weight and increased flight altitude, including the use of cellophane and polycarbonates in envelope construction and the design of the multi‑cell balloon “The Pleiades.” His technical solutions—antifreeze windows, liquid‑oxygen converters, pyrotechnic remote‑release mechanisms and electronics for ballast dumping—were adopted in military operations and by later aerospace engineers. Piccard piloted notable flights and coordinated projects such as Helios and collaborated on Skyhook, stratospheric sounding initiatives that supported atmospheric research. Recognized for practical and pedagogical innovations, he left technical achievements and directly influenced generations of high‑altitude researchers and balloon technologists.
