Jeb Stuart (James Ewell Brown Stuart) was an American military officer who became prominent as a Confederate cavalry general during the Civil War. A West Point graduate, he served on the Kansas frontier and joined the operation against John Brown at Harpers Ferry before the war, building experience in mounted operations and reconnaissance. When he took command of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, Stuart became known for his boldness and skill in deep‑reconnaissance missions, at times executing dramatic rides around enemy forces and seizing important documents on raids such as at Catlett’s Station. His actions contributed to key campaigns in 1862 and 1863, and he played a notable role at Fredericksburg and in protecting Confederate maneuvers. However, controversial decisions during the invasion of Pennsylvania—most notably during the Gettysburg Campaign—limited Robert E. Lee’s command effectiveness and damaged Stuart’s reputation. He remained active opposing Grant during the Overland Campaign and died from wounds received at the Battle of Yellow Tavern (1864). Popular with his troops, he was known for his religiosity, abstinence, and personal elegance.
