Jefferson Poland (born John Jefferson Poland Jr., 1942–2017) was an American activist and writer known for his work in the civil rights movement, sexual liberties campaigns, and antiwar efforts. He began his activism as a young student, taking part in actions organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Freedom Rides in Florida; he was one of the "Tallahassee Ten" arrested for protesting segregation. He later moved to the West Coast, organized farmworkers and took part in early LGBT visibility actions, including pickets against the exclusion of homosexuals from the armed forces.
In 1963 he co-founded the Sexual Freedom League with Leo Koch, an organization that expanded into chapters in the Bay Area and San Diego; he also worked on alternative publications such as the Berkeley Barb and was involved in countercultural initiatives like the Psychedelic Venus Church, which operated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He signed protests against the Vietnam War and participated in student and editorial actions that led to academic suspensions and conflicts with authorities.
Poland's public life combined contributions to sexual and countercultural activism with legal controversies: in the 1980s he faced serious accusations that caused him to live as a fugitive for several years. His legacy is complex, pairing pioneering work for sexual liberties and participation in 1960s movements with episodes that have prompted criticism and investigation.
