James Edward Fassel was an American football coach and player with a notable career at both the collegiate and professional levels. As a coach, he became best known for his tenure as head coach of the New York Giants (1997–2003), during which he revitalized the team, was named Coach of the Year in 1997, and guided the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV following an impressive midseason turnaround in 2000. His management of the roster included rehabilitating quarterback Kerry Collins’s career and high-profile episodes of public leadership, such as securing a playoff berth that propelled the team to a conference title.
Before and after his time with the Giants, Fassel gained experience as an offensive coordinator and assistant with several NFL franchises, including the Broncos, Raiders, Cardinals and Ravens, as well as work in college football and in alternative leagues such as the WFL and the USFL. After the NFL, he served as head coach, general manager and president of the Las Vegas Locomotives in the United Football League, winning championships in 2009 and 2010.
Known for building teams capable of dramatic comebacks and for moments of high public visibility, his legacy is viewed as mixed: praised for memorable wins and turnarounds, but also remembered for unexpected losses and inconsistency. His career left a mark on both the technical and administrative sides of professional American football.
