Jimmy Somerville is a Scottish singer and songwriter whose countertenor/falsetto voice helped define 1980s pop and synth-pop. He rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of Bronski Beat and The Communards, projects that combined commercial success with social themes tied to LGBT rights. With Bronski Beat he achieved international success with "Smalltown Boy" (1984), an emblematic song about rejection and the migration of young gay men that reached the Top 10 in several countries. After leaving Bronski Beat, Somerville formed The Communards, who consolidated his popularity with widely successful singles and covers, including his rendition of "Don't Leave Me This Way," the best-selling single in the UK in 1986.
