Jimmy Wakely (born James Clarence Wakeley) was an American country singer, songwriter and actor, remembered as one of the last "singing cowboys" of film and radio. He was active mainly from the 1930s through the 1950s, recording for labels such as Decca and Capitol, appearing in dozens of B-westerns, and maintaining a regular presence on radio and television programs, including Melody Ranch and his own productions.
His music career found success on the country market and, at times, on the pop charts: in partnership with Margaret Whiting and others, he placed several hits in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including the country/pop number one "Slippin' Around" and recordings of popular songs such as "Silver Bells."
Beyond his artistic work, Wakely went into the record business: he founded Shasta Records, developed a mail-order record sales system, and ran two music publishing companies, converting part of his property into a recording studio. He was honored with stars and inductions into institutions such as the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Western Music Association Hall of Fame.
On stage and on tour he maintained ties to the traditional country circuit, including appearances at the Grand Ole Opry and in western nostalgia shows, leaving a legacy as a performer and producer associated with the era of the singing cowboys.
