Jo Colruyt (Joseph Alphonse Marie Colruyt) is a Belgian businessman associated with the founding family of the Colruyt Group, one of Belgium’s largest retail companies. Under family management, the company established itself in discount supermarkets, operating more than 200 stores nationwide and with activities in France and Luxembourg. The group diversified across the 20th and 21st centuries to include brands such as OKay, Bio-Planet and DATS 24, as well as e-commerce and logistics services. Throughout its history the company introduced important operational innovations for the sector in Belgium: it was an early adopter of computerization in the 1960s, implemented a low-price policy and was among the first to use barcode scanning for inventory management. In sectoral crises, such as the dioxin scandal, the chain helped raise food safety standards by drafting supplier specifications. The group’s legacy under the Colruyt family includes sustainability and corporate responsibility practices, campaigns for animal welfare and digital and loyalty initiatives. Its continued presence in food retail and recent expansion through acquisitions reinforce its prominence as a significant player in the Belgian and regional economy.
