Joachim Peiper was an officer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) and an armored commander in the Waffen-SS, notorious for his role in campaigns on the Eastern and Western Fronts during World War II. As a personal aide to Heinrich Himmler, he was close to the SS command apparatus and witnessed genocidal practices carried out by the organization. On the battlefield he distinguished himself as a battalion and regimental leader in the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, taking part in actions such as the Third Battle of Kharkov and the Battle of the Bulge. Peiper gained wide notoriety for his association with Kampfgruppe Peiper, a unit linked to war crimes against prisoners and civilians, notably the 1944 Malmedy Massacre, for which he was tried and convicted by a United States military tribunal; his death sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. His alleged involvement in crimes in Italy was also investigated, but there was insufficient evidence for conviction. After his release he worked in the automotive industry and lived as a translator in France, maintaining close ties with networks of former SS members. His figure became a cult object among apologists of the Waffen-SS, while historians identify him as representative of Nazi ideology and methods. In 1976 he was killed when his house was set on fire by opponents of neo‑Nazism.
