Joaquín Torres-García was a Uruguayan artist of international stature who worked as a painter, draftsman, sculptor, writer and teacher. Trained in Catalonia and active in major European art centers and New York, he engaged with avant-garde movements such as neoplasticism without subscribing to its strict formal rules. He worked with Antoni Gaudí and associated with key figures of modernism, influences that shaped his career and aesthetic eclecticism.

Returning to Montevideo in the 1930s, Torres-García synthesized diverse sources — African art, pre-Columbian and other so-called primitive traditions — into his own system called Constructive Universalism. This method reworked geometric language by integrating symbols and a pedagogical approach to art, attracting followers who consolidated his practice across the Southern Cone.

Beyond his paintings and sculptures, he published theoretical texts, notably "Descubrimiento de Sí Mismo" ("Discovery of Oneself"), and devoted himself to teaching, leaving an institutional legacy that culminated in the Torres García Museum. His work influenced generations and helped place Latin American art within the international networks of the twentieth century.
