Barbara Hale was an American actress whose career ranged from classic Hollywood films to television, best known for portraying strong, quietly confident female characters. She began as a model in Chicago before moving to Hollywood in 1943, appearing in films throughout the 1940s and 1950s alongside stars such as Frank Sinatra, Charlton Heston and Dean Martin. Her film credits include The Window (1949), Jolson Sings Again (1949) and Airport (1970). Her public recognition grew on television: Hale is most remembered for playing Della Street, the secretary to lawyer-detective Perry Mason, a role she played in the original series (1957–1966) and in numerous later TV movies. The long association with the character brought professional acclaim, including an Emmy in 1959 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In her personal life she had a long marriage to actor Bill Williams, with whom she had three children, including actor William Katt. Hale retired from acting in 1995 and is remembered for her steady presence in popular works of television’s golden age and for the legacy she left in legal series and TV dramas.
