Joe Nuxhall was a left-handed American pitcher whose professional baseball career is notable for two distinct chapters: debuting as the youngest player ever to appear in a Major League Baseball game and serving for many years as the voice of the Cincinnati team. His record appearance came in 1944, at age 15, when he was called up under exceptional circumstances during World War II; he reestablished himself in the majors in 1952 and was selected to the National League All-Star Game in 1955 and 1956.

As a player, he spent most of his career with the Cincinnati Reds, compiling 135 wins and a 3.90 ERA over 16 seasons, holding the franchise record for games pitched for years and still holding the mark among left-handers. After hanging up his glove, he became a broadcaster: he served as the Reds’ radio announcer from 1967 to 2004 and continued working part-time until his death.

Known as “The Ol’ Left-hander,” Nuxhall left a twofold legacy in the sport—both for the unusual career that began in his teens and for his long presence on the team’s broadcasts—and is remembered for his singular debut and his long association with the Cincinnati franchise.
