Johann Gottfried von Herder was a German philosopher, theologian, literary critic and writer whose work shaped Weimar Classicism and anticipated important currents of Romanticism. He also worked as a translator and language scholar, proposing a historically evolutionary view of language and arguing that each nation’s literary genius is expressed through its own language and popular traditions. Trained in Königsberg and influenced by figures such as Hamann and, to some extent, by Kant’s lectures, Herder developed a critique of classical aesthetics and of imitating ancient models. His early writings on German literature and major works—including the Essay on the Origin of Language and Ideas for the Philosophy of the History of Humanity—opened new directions in historiography, language theory and modern literary criticism. Herder also valued popular culture: he collected and published songs and folklore, arguing that cultural authenticity springs from national roots. His impact was most visible in the intellectual formation of later generations, notably influencing the young Goethe and helping renew letters and ideas in eighteenth‑century Germany.
