Johannes Peter Müller was an influential 19th‑century German physiologist and comparative anatomist whose work reshaped physiology as a scientific discipline. Author of the magnum opus Handbuch der Physiologie des Menschen, Müller combined anatomical observation, chemistry and microscopic techniques to study the sensory organs and nerve action, formulating the well‑known law of specific energies of the senses. His book became a standard reference and teaching text for much of the 19th century.
Beyond physiology, Müller worked extensively in comparative zoology, particularly ichthyology and herpetology. He undertook numerous expeditions to the Baltic, North, Adriatic and Mediterranean seas, published studies on amphibians and described new species; he also introduced anatomical terms such as desmoide and described lesions like the cystosarcoma phylloides.
A professor in Bonn and later a full professor in Berlin, he mentored prominent scientists — including Helmholtz, Schwann and Haeckel — helping to train generations of physiologists and biologists. He received international academic recognition, and the paramesonephric duct (Müllerian duct) was named in his honor.
