John Dryden was an English poet, playwright, and critic whose work and influence dominated literary life during the Restoration. Born in Northamptonshire, he graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, and settled in London, where his career included posts with Oliver Cromwell’s Secretary of State and extensive work as an author and polemicist across the 1660s–1690s. His output includes patriotic and religious poems, political satires, and numerous stage works—comedies, tragedies, and operas—that made him a central figure in English theatre and letters. Works such as Astraea Redux celebrated the Restoration and helped shape the period’s political and aesthetic tone. Dryden was also an influential literary critic: he systematized metric and aesthetic preferences that served as a model for later generations, with eighteenth‑century poets adopting his style and verse. Buried in Westminster Abbey, he left a lasting legacy in English poetry and drama, remembered for his versatility, his capacity for political engagement, and his normative influence on eighteenth‑century poetry.
