John Galsworthy was an English novelist and playwright whose work gained wide recognition in the early twentieth century. Born into a wealthy family, he abandoned a legal career to devote himself to literature, publishing his first book at thirty and achieving critical and popular success from 1906 with The Man of Property, the first volume of the family saga that became known as The Forsyte Saga. The trilogy formed by The Forsyte Saga, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter follows three generations and depicts social and moral conflicts from the late nineteenth century into the early decades of the twentieth, partly reflecting experiences and relationships from his own family. The work established his reputation as a realist narrator and keen observer of bourgeois life. As a playwright, Galsworthy wrote socially minded dramas addressing issues such as labor exploitation, prison conditions, repression of women and the moral dilemmas of war, and he was actively involved in campaigns for public causes — from animal welfare to prison reform and workers’ rights — while remaining unaffiliated with any political party. In 1932 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, cited for the “distinguished art of narration” that reaches its peak in The Forsyte Saga. Although his plays are less frequently staged today, his novels continue to be republished and to influence adaptations and scholarship on English society of the period.
