John Gilbert (born John Cecil Pringle) was one of the leading stars of American silent cinema, celebrated as “the great lover” and a box-office rival to Rudolph Valentino in the 1920s. The son of company actors, he rose in Hollywood from extra work to prominent roles at studios such as Fox and, above all, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he headlined notable hits including He Who Gets Slapped, The Merry Widow, The Big Parade and La Bohème. His professional and personal partnership with Greta Garbo became famous, producing widely discussed films such as Flesh and the Devil, Love and A Woman of Affairs. At his peak, he was a regular presence in productions directed by figures like King Vidor, Victor Sjöström and Erich von Stroheim. The transition to sound film brought difficulties: although his voice was not universally criticized, poorly received films—and tensions with studio management—tarnished his public image. He tried to recapture his success with dramatic roles and projects he wrote, but never fully regained his former standing. The end of his career was marked by health problems and alcoholism; he died in 1936. His legacy endures in the memory of silent cinema, commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in biographies that document his life.
