John Inman was a British actor whose career focused mainly on television comedy and popular theatre. He became a recognizable figure in UK entertainment for his portrayal of the eccentric Mr. Wilberforce Humphries in the sitcom Are You Being Served?, a role that popularized the catchphrase “I’m free!” and brought him awards and wide visibility during the 1970s and early 1980s. Before his television success, Inman worked in clothing stores and in repertory theatre, earning his Equity card and making his West End debut in the 1960s. His move into TV began in 1970 and was consolidated by the comedy created by David Croft, which ran for ten seasons and spawned international versions as well as a reunion in the series Grace & Favour. After his television peak, Inman enjoyed a long touring career and became one of the best-known pantomime dames in the UK, appearing in more than 40 pantomime productions. In later decades he also made occasional appearances in series and variety shows, maintaining a presence on the theatre circuit until health problems interrupted his activities.
