John Law Hume was a Scottish violinist known for joining the RMS Titanic’s orchestra on its April 1912 maiden voyage. From Dumfries, he had already played on several ships and was hired by the music agency C.W. & F.N. Black to perform in the ensemble led by Wallace Hartley, which entertained second-class passengers. During the sinking, Hume and the other musicians continued to play in an effort to calm passengers while the lifeboats were being launched, an act that earned them posthumous recognition for bravery. Hume was 21 when he died in the disaster; his body was recovered by the CS Mackay-Bennett and buried in Fairview, Halifax, where a memorial in his hometown commemorates his death in the line of duty. Hume’s case is part of the collective account of the ship’s eight musicians, whose conduct during the tragedy became an important element of the Titanic’s public memory and helped shape their remembrance as symbols of courage and professionalism in extreme circumstances.
