John Logie Baird was a Scottish engineer and inventor known for developing the first practical mechanical television systems. Between 1924 and 1926 he carried out experiments that led to the transmission of still images and, in October 1925, the first moving pictures; on 26 January 1926 he gave a public demonstration considered the first viable television system. In 1927 he founded the Baird Television Development Company, which in the following years achieved pioneering milestones, including long-distance transmissions over telephone lines, the first transatlantic transmission between London and New York in 1928, and broadcasts for the BBC. His apparatus used spinning discs and mechanical technology, enabling the first moving images despite limited resolution and quality. By the late 1930s his mechanical systems had been overtaken by electronic solutions with higher definition, but Baird also explored electronic techniques in their early stages. His work marked the formative period of television as a technological and cultural medium, leaving a legacy in the foundational phases of broadcast television.
