John Morrissey (known as “Old Smoke”) was a prominent public figure in the second half of the nineteenth century whose career combined street violence, gambling, and politics. Born in Ireland and raised in New York, he first made his name as a bare‑knuckle boxer and heavyweight champion, a victory that raised his social standing and financed his entry into professional gambling. Owner of gambling houses in Manhattan in the 1850s and 1860s, he built both wealth and influence in the urban underworld. From that economic base, Morrissey moved into politics, serving as a U.S. congressman from New York (1867–1871) with the backing of Tammany Hall. He later broke with the political machine and was elected state senator for New York (1876–1878) as an anti‑Tammany candidate, showing an ability to navigate electoral and clientelist interests. His notoriety combines sporting achievements, controversial business activity, and public service: he left an ambiguous legacy as an urban populist who rose from street fights to Congress, symbolizing social mobility and the contradictions of political power in America’s nineteenth‑century industrial cities.
