John W. Parsons is an American criminal known for a spectacular escape from a Columbus, Ohio, jail and his subsequent recapture. In the 2000s he gained notoriety for bank robberies and clashes with police that earned him the label “Ohio’s most wanted.” While held in pretrial detention in Columbus, Parsons planned a complex escape: he dug through a section of his cell wall, used improvised tools and took advantage of a distraction in the indoor yard to get out through the building’s structure. The breakout mobilized a large state police response and received extensive media coverage. He remained at large for about two months, living in precarious conditions and hiding in rural areas until a worker discovered him and he was recaptured on October 19, 2006. Sentenced to life imprisonment, he was transferred to a maximum-security prison in Ohio. The episode has been featured in television compilations about notorious escapes, cementing Parsons’s reputation as an emblematic case of prison escape in the early 21st century.
