John S. Rodgers is an American politician and farmer, known for representing rural areas of northeastern Vermont. He began his legislative career in the Vermont House of Representatives (2003–2011) and served in the state Senate for the Essex–Orleans district (2013–2021). From a farming family, he continues to work in agriculture, including a property producing hemp/cannabis and a previous business in masonry and earthmoving. Over the course of his career, Rodgers has presented himself as a moderate, switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2024. He drew attention for conservative stances on local issues, notably as a critic of gun controls and for controversial proposals such as attempting to restrict young people’s use of cell phones. In the 2024 elections he was the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Vermont; he won a plurality of the popular vote and, having failed to secure a majority, the choice was decided by the state legislature, which elected and sworn him in as the 85th lieutenant governor.
