John Womack Jr. is an American historian and economist, known for his research on the history of Mexico and Latin America, with an emphasis on the Mexican Revolution and the figure of Emiliano Zapata. Educated at Harvard and with postgraduate study at Oxford, he established an international reputation with his doctoral thesis on Zapata and the revolution in Morelos (1910–1920), which became a standard reference in studies of Mexican agrarian and social history. Over the course of his career, Womack taught Latin American history and economics at Harvard, focusing on agrarian history, the world of labor, and industrialization in countries such as Mexico, Cuba, and Colombia. His work includes influential books on the Mexican Revolution and analyses of rural and labor social movements. Recognized by the academic community, he received awards and honors for his research on Mexico; he also publicly expressed solidarity with Mexican labor organizations. His work has served as a foundation for generations of historians interested in the social and political dynamics of twentieth‑century Latin America.
