Joop den Uyl (Johannes Marten den Uijl) was a Dutch economist and social-democratic politician, long-time leader of the Labour Party (PvdA) and prime minister from 1973 to 1977. Trained in economics at the University of Amsterdam, he worked as a civil servant, resistance press journalist and director of the Wiardi Beckman think tank before entering parliamentary politics, where he became known as the spokesman on economic affairs. As leader of the PvdA, Den Uyl broadened the party’s base, attracting left-wing voters and weakening smaller parties. He led a cabinet widely regarded as the most left-leaning in the Netherlands’ recent history, responsible for significant social reforms and for managing severe crises of the period—including the effects of the 1973 oil crisis, international scandals and internal coalition tensions that ultimately brought down the government. After serving as prime minister, he remained an important political figure: he returned to parliamentary leadership, served later as deputy prime minister and minister of Labour, and exerted international influence as vice president of the Socialist International, advocating disarmament. He is remembered for skilled oratory, an idealistic profile and a divisive legacy, assessed variously by historians and the public.
