Jorge Rafael Videla was an Argentine Army general and head of the military junta that governed Argentina from 1976 to 1981. He assumed power after the coup of 24 March 1976 and established the self-styled Proceso de Reorganización Nacional, a period defined by strong militarization of the state and repressive measures against opponents. His government implemented security policies that resulted in illegal detentions, torture, disappearances, and executions; it is estimated that more than 30,000 people were killed or disappeared during the dictatorship.
