Joris-Karl Huysmans was a French novelist and literary critic whose work encapsulates the aesthetic, spiritual, and intellectual shifts in late 19th-century France. Initially influenced by naturalism and a friend of Émile Zola, he quickly became the central figure of decadence with À rebours (1884), a novel that crystallized a fin de siècle sensibility characterized by erudition, an exuberant vocabulary, and meticulous description.

Beyond his fiction, Huysmans worked as an art critic, championing symbolist and impressionist currents while criticizing academic painting, although he retained admiration for Gothic and Flemish art. His literary output moved from Schopenhauerian pessimism and an interest in the supernatural—including an engagement with satanism in Là-bas—to a spiritual quest that culminated in his conversion to Catholicism.

In his later novels, such as En route and La Cathédrale, his prose reflects deep study of liturgy, medieval art, and religious life, leaving the mark of a restless author: indifferent to fashions, demanding in language, and essential to understanding the cultural and spiritual tensions of the Belle Époque.
