Joseph E. Stiglitz is an American economist of international renown, known for his contributions to the economics of information and for his outspoken critiques of neoliberalism and the management of globalization. He served as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Clinton administration and held senior positions at the World Bank, including Chief Economist and Vice President for Development Policy, roles that placed him at the center of debates on public policy and international cooperation. He received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2001, shared with A. Michael Spence and George A. Akerlof, for laying the foundations of the theory of markets with asymmetric information — work that transformed understanding of adverse selection, credit rationing and unemployment. His academic work blends Keynesian traditions with emphases on inequality and market failures. Stiglitz has also developed arguments on public finance drawing on Georgist ideas, advocating taxation of land rents and policies to correct externalities. As a public intellectual, he has criticized institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank and proposed alternatives for global economic governance, including proposals concerning international monetary reserves. His legacy marks a renewed strand of development thinking and a sustained critique of the assumptions of perfect markets.
