Josiah Willard Gibbs was an American scientist and mechanical engineer whose theoretical contributions shaped modern physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Working mainly at Yale, where he spent most of his career, Gibbs established thermodynamics as a deductive discipline and was one of the founders of statistical mechanics — a term he coined — which accounts for the laws of thermodynamics through the statistical properties of ensembles of states of many-particle systems. As a mathematician, he developed the modern form of vector calculus and described the Gibbs phenomenon in Fourier analysis; in physical optics he applied Maxwell’s equations to practical problems. His work, almost entirely theoretical, proved highly useful with the advancement of industrial chemistry in the twentieth century. Recognized internationally during his lifetime, he received the Royal Society’s Copley Medal in 1901 and was praised by figures such as Albert Einstein. One of the first PhDs in engineering in the United States, he left a lasting legacy in the formal structuring of central branches of science.
