Karl August Robert Hanke was a German Nazi official whose career rose from local activism in Berlin to senior positions within the Third Reich. Originally a milling master and instructor, he joined the party in 1928 and became a close collaborator of Joseph Goebbels, serving as his deputy in the Propaganda office and holding administrative posts in the regime’s cultural apparatus. His proximity to central figures such as Goebbels and the architect Albert Speer aided his rapid advancement within the party hierarchy. During World War II Hanke held regional power: from 1941 he was Gauleiter and Oberpräsident of Lower Silesia, responsible for civil administration and local mobilization. In mid‑1945 he was appointed the fifth and last Reichsführer-SS, a largely symbolic post in the regime’s final days. Captured on 6 May 1945, Hanke was wounded during an escape attempt and killed by Czech guards on 8 June, after the end of hostilities. His career illustrates how party cadres translated political influence into regional and military control in the regime’s closing months.
