Karl-Otto Koch was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who held command positions at several Nazi concentration camps, notably serving as the first commandant of Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen and, from 1941 to 1942, of the Majdanek camp in occupied Poland. Initially a soldier in the First World War, he joined the Nazi Party and the SS in the 1930s and rose to leadership roles within various facilities of the repressive system.
During his commands, serious allegations surfaced of corruption, the theft of property and involvement in the murder of prisoners. Internal investigations conducted by SS authorities revealed illicit enrichment and killings ordered to silence witnesses; his conduct also prompted accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior and drunkenness. Those inquiries led to his arrest, trial by SS tribunals and conviction.
In August 1944 he was sentenced to death for crimes that dishonored the SS and was executed in April 1945. Koch’s name is associated both with the direct administration of extermination camps and with the systematic misuse of Nazi mechanisms to appropriate victims’ property, leaving a record marked by corruption, institutionalized violence and direct responsibility for war crimes.
