Katherine Jane “Kate” Chase was a central figure in Washington high society during the American Civil War, known for her role as a hostess and political broker. The daughter of the influential Salmon P. Chase — Lincoln’s Treasury Secretary and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court — Kate performed the duties of an informal first lady while organizing salons and receiving political and military leaders, becoming known as the “belle of the North.”

Her social standing and speaking ability placed her at the center of Northern political networks; she vigorously supported her father’s presidential ambitions and took an active part in debates over the conduct of the war, at times in conflict with the administration itself. Educated in New York, she combined learning and elegance, qualities that drew the attention of figures such as Charles Sumner and James Garfield.

In 1863 she married William Sprague, a textile magnate and then U.S. senator from Rhode Island; the wedding was a major social event in Washington, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1882 amid scandals and disagreements. Kate Chase’s legacy remains tied to her social and political influence during the Civil War era — a woman who acted publicly in a typically male environment and who helped shape alliances and decisions of her time.
