Kathryn Grayson was an American actress and coloratura soprano whose career was established in studio musicals and postwar lyric theatre. Contracted by Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer in the early 1940s, she rose to prominence in films such as Thousands Cheer (1943), Anchors Aweigh (1945) — opposite Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly — and in the cinematic versions of Show Boat (1951) and Kiss Me Kate (1953), the latter two among her best‑known roles. Trained as an opera singer from childhood, Grayson moved between film, musical theatre and operatic repertoire, performing works such as La bohème, Madama Butterfly and La traviata over the course of her career. On stage she took part in notable productions such as Camelot (1962–1964) and received nominations and recognition for her performances in classic musical repertoire. Beyond her screen work, she was noted for performances for the troops during World War II and for insisting on integrated audiences in segregated settings as a matter of professional principle. Her legacy lies in the union of operatic vocal technique and the cinematic spectacle of Hollywood's golden‑age musicals, leaving a lasting contribution to both film musicals and the theatre scene.
