Kenneth Anger was an American underground experimental filmmaker, author and actor whose short, independent work influenced generations of filmmakers and artists. A specialist in short films from an early age, he made more than forty films that blend surrealism, homoeroticism and elements of the occult, aiming not for commercial success but for aesthetic and cultural impact. Films such as Fireworks (1947) and Scorpio Rising (1964) are notable both for their explicit exploration of homosexuality and for their social provocation—some of them associated with gay visibility causes.
Alongside his film career, Anger became known as the author of controversial best-sellers about Hollywood that exposed rumors and secrets of the industry. His fascination with the occult, especially Aleister Crowley and the philosophy of Thelema, pervaded works such as Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome and Lucifer Rising, and brought him into contact with figures from rock music and 1960s–70s pop culture.
Recognized by peers and critics for his originality, Anger influenced filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and John Waters. Private in his personal life, he maintained a selective public presence and left a legacy as a pioneer of queer cinema and American experimental film.
