Kim Darby (born Deborah Zerby) is an American actress whose film and television career grew in the late 1960s and 1970s. She was raised in a family of performers—the daughter of dancers known as the "Dancing Zerbys"—and began appearing on screen as a teenager, performing as a dancer in Bye Bye Birdie (1963) before moving into dramatic roles. Her best-known role is Mattie Ross in True Grit (1969), a performance that brought her to wide public attention. Over the following decades she appeared in films such as The Strawberry Statement (1970), Norwood (1970) and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), and made numerous guest appearances on classic American television series including Star Trek, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and The Fugitive. In the 1970s she was notable for the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and the TV horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973). She faced personal and professional difficulties that affected her career, and beginning in 1990 she also devoted herself to teaching acting in the Los Angeles area, joining the UCLA Extension program in 1992. Darby continues to make occasional appearances on television and in film, maintaining a body of work associated with the golden era of American film and TV and with roles spanning westerns, drama and horror.
