Kitty Hawks is an American interior designer known for high-end residential projects and an elite clientele. A graduate of Smith College who also attended the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA, she began her career in agency work and creative direction—serving as creative director for Perry Ellis and Stendig Furniture—before opening her own firm in New York. Her work attracted attention beginning in 1988, when she was hired to decorate an apartment at the Hotel des Artistes, and since then she has worked for figures in journalism, film, and the arts such as Tom Brokaw, Candice Bergen, Agnes Gund, Michael Ovitz, Mike Nichols, and Diane Sawyer. Hawks is often described as spontaneous in her creative process, favoring solutions that are not predetermined. Beyond her practice, she played a significant institutional role: she served for more than a decade on the boards of the Design Trust for Public Space and the Municipal Art Society of New York, and she taught residential design at the Parsons School of Interior Design. In recognition of her career, she was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2005.
