Kurt Gerstein was a German mining engineer who, during World War II, held a post at the Hygiene Institute of the Waffen-SS in Berlin. A member of the Nazi Party since 1933 and briefly active in the SA, Gerstein was assigned to technical duties that brought him into direct contact with the mechanisms of Nazi extermination. In 1942, after witnessing mass murders at the extermination camps of Bełżec and Treblinka, he sought to convey detailed information about what he had seen to neutral embassies and representatives of the Catholic Church in an effort to alert the international community. Those communications and his later testimony became central elements in accounts of the crimes he witnessed. At the end of the war, Gerstein drafted the so-called Gerstein Report, a document compiling his observations and experiences of the genocide. Arrested in France in 1945, he was found hanged in his cell under circumstances that were never fully clarified. His historical legacy remains tied to the documentary value of his writings and the impact they had on representations of the Holocaust in culture and public debate, including works for stage and film that probe questions of responsibility and collective silence.
