Kurt Hiller was an essayist, political journalist and pacifist activist from Germany, noted for his stylistic originality and for his pioneering role in the early twentieth‑century civil‑rights movement for LGBT people. Trained in law and philosophy in Berlin, he allied himself with avant‑garde intellectual and literary figures, contributing to magazines such as PAN, Der Sturm and Die Aktion and taking part in literary cabarets and cultural associations that shaped the pre‑First World War artistic scene. As an activist, Hiller maintained a long association with the Scientific‑Humanitarian Committee, succeeding Magnus Hirschfeld as its president in 1929 and working energetically for the legalization and recognition of the rights of homosexual and transgender people. Politically identified with socialism and influenced by Kant and Schopenhauer, he advocated public proposals for democratic reform, including the idea of a “logocracy” and a consultative role for intellectuals in government. Persecuted by the Nazi regime for being Jewish, a pacifist, a socialist and homosexual, Hiller endured arrests and detention in camps, later fleeing to Prague and London, where he continued anti‑Nazi activism and exile initiatives. He returned to Germany in 1955, lived in Hamburg, received the German Critics’ Prize in 1962 and unsuccessfully attempted to reestablish the Scientific‑Humanitarian Committee. His legacy lies in his essays, his campaign for sexual rights and his influence on the cultural and political debates of his era.
