Lady Flora Elizabeth Rawdon-Hastings was a British aristocrat who served as a lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria. Born into a family of high standing—the daughter of the Marquess of Hastings—she became a central figure in the palace intrigues that shaped the early years of Victoria’s reign, especially because of her association with John Conroy’s circle and the so-called “Kensington System,” a scheme designed to control the young princess.
In early 1839 Lady Flora became the target of rumors accusing her of an extramarital pregnancy; after submitting to a medical examination she was found not to be pregnant but to have an advanced hepatic tumor. The public fallout from the episode—volving correspondence, press intervention and mutual accusations between court factions—temporarily damaged the queen’s reputation and fueled a scandal that engaged public opinion.
Beyond her role at court, Lady Flora left a body of poetry: a collection of verses was compiled by her sister and published posthumously, receiving praise for its sensitivity and naturalistic eye. She died in 1839, and her case remains cited as an example of the personal and political tensions at the British court of the period and of the social impact of scandals involving aristocratic women.
