The Marquis de La Fayette was a French aristocrat and soldier whose career spanned two revolutions that helped shape the modern world. Known as “The Hero of Two Worlds,” he rose to prominence in the American War of Independence as a major general in the Continental Army, serving alongside George Washington, taking part in battles such as Brandywine and Rhode Island, and contributing to the siege of Yorktown. His international role and the prestige he gained in the United States made him a symbolic figure of the liberal cause.

Back in France, La Fayette played a significant political role in the events that preceded the French Revolution: he proposed calling the Estates General and helped draft an outline of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. He was appointed commander‑in‑chief of the National Guard during a period of intense instability and sought to reconcile order with reform, aligning him with both moderate liberals and opponents of the radicals.

The revolutionary radicalization brought him into conflict with the Jacobins; detained by foreign forces, he spent years in captivity before returning to play a liberal role in Parliament during the Restoration. In 1824 he received an official invitation from the United States as a guest of the nation, a lasting recognition of his part in American independence. His legacy remains associated with the ideal of constitutional liberty and the transatlantic influence between France and the United States.
