Laurent de Brunhoff was a French author and illustrator best known for continuing the children’s series Babar, originally created by his father, Jean de Brunhoff. Trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and influenced by Othon Friesz, Laurent returned to his father’s world after World War II, learning to draw in his father’s style to preserve and expand the family’s work. He published his first Babar book in 1946 and over the course of his life released nearly fifty titles in the series, in addition to original characters such as Bonhomme and Serafina. His work kept alive the iconography and storytelling of the elephant prince, ensuring the series’ editorial continuity and international presence through translations and successive editions. Honored with distinctions including Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, de Brunhoff also organized and contributed to major exhibitions of his family’s collection in museums across Europe, the United States, and Japan. His artistic legacy is linked to the longevity and cultural influence of Babar in twentieth- and twenty-first-century children’s literature.
