Lee McGeorge Durrell is an American naturalist, writer, zooarchaeologist and presenter, known for her work alongside her husband Gerald Durrell in the conservation and management of Jersey Zoo. Trained in philosophy with postgraduate studies in animal behavior, she carried out research on the vocalizations of mammals and birds in Madagascar, combining academic study and fieldwork from an early stage. After marrying Gerald Durrell, she collaborated closely with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, taking part in the last field expeditions he led — including missions to the Mascarene Islands, Madagascar and Russia — and coauthoring accounts of those journeys. She became honorary director of the organization after her husband’s death and played a central role in renaming the body in recognition of his legacy. Author and coauthor of works on naturalism and conservation, Durrell also presented television series on wildlife and served as a consultant on dramatizations based on Gerald’s work. She is noted for initiatives to preserve rare species — including efforts related to the ploughshare tortoise and the biological collections deposited in museums for genetic research — and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2011.
