Leo Szilard was a Hungarian–American physicist, biologist, and inventor whose work shaped nuclear physics and the biological sciences of the twentieth century. He is remembered for conceiving the nuclear chain reaction in 1933 and patenting the idea in 1936, and for being part of the team that achieved first criticality with Chicago Pile-1 in 1942. He collaborated with Enrico Fermi on reactor design and served as head of physics at the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory. Szilard also played a decisive role in raising public awareness about nuclear weapons: he drafted the letter that prompted Einstein to warn the U.S. government in 1939 and, in 1945, prepared a petition calling for a nonlethal demonstration of the atomic bomb before its military use. Later he warned of weapons that could threaten human survival. At the same time, he made influential inventions and discoveries in biology and technology: research on feedback inhibition, the invention of the chemostat, and contributions to electron microscopy and particle accelerators. He founded organizations such as the Council for a Livable World and helped establish the Salk Institute, leaving a multifaceted legacy spanning science, ethics, and public policy.
