Leonardo Conti was a physician and a senior official of the Nazi regime, serving as Reich Health Leader and SS‑Obergruppenführer. Active from the 1920s in nationalist and antisemitic organizations, he joined the SA and later the SS, rising to leadership positions within the Third Reich’s public health apparatus.
As head of public health and president of the Nazi Medical League, Conti promoted “racial hygiene” policies and the exclusion of Jewish doctors from professional practice, openly advocating the removal of the “Jewish element” from German medicine. He coordinated the expansion of state health services for purposes of genetic control and population selection.
He took part in planning the measures that led to the program known as Action T4, intended for the systematic killing of people with physical and mental disabilities; historical estimates attribute hundreds of thousands of victims to that program. After Germany’s defeat, Conti was arrested in May 1945 and killed himself in October that year before he could be brought to trial.
