Leroy Vinnegar was an American jazz double-bassist, self-taught, whose career was established on the Los Angeles scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Known for his distinctive walking bass line — a rhythmic sequence of ascending or descending notes — he earned the nickname “The Walker” and became a sought-after presence in studios and clubs.
He worked primarily as a sideman on key recordings of the period alongside names such as Lee Konitz, André Previn, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Shelly Manne and many others, contributing to widely circulated albums such as My Fair Lady (Previn/Manne, 1956) and Swiss Movement (Eddie Harris/Les McCann, 1969). He also took part in soundtracks and pop albums, including work with Van Morrison.
In addition to numerous collaborations, he recorded as a leader and played an important role in California clubs such as the Lighthouse Café. He moved to Portland in 1986 and received an official tribute from the state of Oregon in 1995. His legacy remains tied to his rhythmic command of the double bass and his influence on the West Coast jazz scene.
